LG G Pro 2 Released at MWC 2014

With the LG G Pro 2 being labelled as one of the best phones of 2013 by many media companies, LG had to come back with something bigger and better to compete. Today at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2014 in Barcelona we saw the release of the LG G Pro 2 with it’s large 5.9″ screen.

The 5.9″ screen is a true full HD IPS plus LCD capacitive touchscreen which allows for 16 million colours to be displayed. Since it is a full HD screen it obviously features 1920×1080 pixels, resulting in a 373ppi pixel density. Although it features such a large display, the main buttons which are used for navigating around the phone are now on-screen buttons and therefore takes up some of the screen, however this does result in the device looking a lot more simple and minimalistic when the display is switched off, as well as allowing for LG to reduce the bezels around the screen.

With LG’s choice to make the G Pro 2 a lot lighter and thinner, they had to compensate in some ways. It is too thin to have any physical button on the side which rules out any power or volume controls being on the side, as a result users have to use the rocker on the back as a way to control the device in particular ways, since it is part of the LG G family, it was pretty much certain that there would have been a rear rocker. One very unique feature which we saw in the G Flex was the knock to unlock, LG have included this in the G Pro 2 as a way to enter a code, you have to tap your screen in a user set combo to unlock your device. Definitely not a necessary feature but definitely something nice to have.

Specs:

  • 5.9″ true full HD IPS plus LCD capacitive touchscreen (resolution of 1920×1080 and 373ppi)
  • 13-Megapixel camera rear camera capable of 4K video shooting
  • Front facing 2.1-megapixel camera
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor
  • 3GB of ram
  • 3200mAh Removable battery
  • Android 4.4 KitKat

Just like the rest of the LG G family, tweaks have been made to stock Android to make it their own device and include some useful features. For a very long time Android on smartphones has been lacking a sense of multitasking apart from the Note series by Samsung. LG have incorporated a dual screen mode which allows for the user to select two applications which they would like to use at the same time. A second mode has also been incorporated to allow for one handed use, you can now reduce the size of the screen.

LG haven’t said anything about UK pricing or a release date, or even if it will be released over here, however since it seems like such a powerful phablet device there is hope that there will be a global roll out sometime this year.

It’s a shame that we haven’t been able to attend MWC 2014 and experience the LG G Pro 2 first hand which means that we are in no way to give our own opinions, however from what we have read it seems like the Samsung Note 3 finally has competition and may no longer be regarded as one of the best Android phones currently.
